Automated External Defibrillator – More About AED For Heart Attack Safety

An automated external defibrillator bearing the popular abbreviation AED is a conveniently portable electronic device to diagnose automatically the life threatening arrhythmias (irregular cardiac rhythms) of the heart beat in a heart patient. Defibrillation is the mechanical application of electrical therapy to keep control on arrhythmias and enable the heart to regenerate an undisturbed rhythm. The so called mechanical device is designed in such a way that anyone can easily learn to handle.

Types of cardiac problem =>

The device is fabricated to treat two types of cardiac set back in function. They are:

1. Pulseless condition of the cardiac (Ventricular Tachycardia identified as VT or V-Tach)
2. Shortened function of the cardiac  (Ventricular Fibrillation identified as VF or V-Fib)

In these two conditions, the heart will be functioning, but life threatening with malfunctioning.  The heart beats with V-Tach are in high frequency striving to pump blood whereas in V-Fib the electrical pulses of the heart are in a chaotic function that prevents effective pumping of blood. It’s to be noted that an AED cannot give a positive clinical outcome except for a chance that the patient recovers regulated rhythms for survival by administering drugs.

Risk of delayed treatment =>

Warning should be taken for commencing immediate treatment lest the patient will fall a prey to serious and irreversible brain damage ultimately leading to death. If a person is on cardiac arrest just for a few minutes (just three to five), the brain and tissues get irreversible bio-death. The critical condition can be outdone possibly by treating with defibrillation. The timely use of AED can increase the fair chance of survival. The use of AED has proved amazing effects for cardiac arrhythmia treatment.

Operation of AED =>

AED can be used by anyone who has a basic training in operation and maintenance of the instrument. You have also a little sophisticated manual devices as well as semi-automatic defibrillators recommended for health professionals. Such one can serve as a pacemaker to stimulate the heart rate when it is slow. Today, trend is growing among many for having AED of own at home. It is consoling that the price level is affordable. It may be advisable that owning AED personally may be highly helping for those with confirmed heart conditions. But proper training is insisted for those who possess an AED of own.

Where to get AED? =>

AEDs can be had usually either from trained personnel attending related organizations including corporate as well as government offices, private business corners, and universities. Health centers, community centers, and other public workplaces also have chance to possess AED facility. It has been established by health researchers that cardiac arrest problem is felt at any age group. In many occasions, emergency vehicles with ambulance facilities carry AEDs along with manual devices. In some areas, Police troop, Fire service personnel, community servers, and volunteers also come forward to carry such defibrillators. Keeping AEDs in commercial airliners, ships, and other transport modes has become a must.

Checking of AEDs =>

The AEDs on purchase should be checked as recommended by the manufacturers. There are some special provisions to switch on for self checking with an indicator. The date of expiry is another thing you should note and verify whether the life time is still on live. The expiry dates can be seen on the electrode pads though some models have the date visible through a slit window. The batteries are also to be checked for life expiry. If the battery has a short life, you can ask for a replacement on the spot or shortly within the warranty period.

Models =>

With all such facilities and provisions you can select models to your taste for easy handling –either manual type, semi automatic or fully automatic.
