Cholesterol and Heart Attack

Introduction
Very few people are aware about the relationship between the cholesterol and heart attack.

Blood Cholesterol Level
Cholesterol occurs in all foods of animal origin. Blood cholesterol level is controlled by following factors:

1) The amount absorbed from food.
2) The rate of catabolism (destruction of food for energy production) and excretion in the bile.
3) Intestinal absorption of bile acids
4) Equillibrium between plasma and tissue.

Blood cholesterol numbers are the best  indicators of cholesterol level.

Importance of Cholesterol
Your blood cholesterol level has a lot to do withyour chances of getting heart attack.

High bloodcholesterol is one of the major risk factors for heartattack.

A risk factor is a condition that increasesyour chance of getting a disease.

In fact, the higheryour blood cholesterol level, the greater your riskfor developing heart disease or having a heartattack.

Heart Attack is the number one killer ofwomen and men in the United States. Each year, more than a million Americans have heart attacks, and about a half million people die from heartdisease.

Cholesterol andHeart Attack

When there is too much cholesterol (a fat-like substance)in your blood, it builds up in the walls ofyour arteries.

Over time, this buildup causes hardeningof the arteries so that arteries become narrowedand blood flow to the heart is slowed downor blocked.

The blood carries oxygen to the heart, and if enough blood and oxygen cannot reach your heart, you may suffer chest pain.

If the blood supplyto a portion of the heart is completely cut off by ablockage, the result is a heart attack.

High blood cholesterol level  itself does not cause highcholesterol symptoms, in the earlier stages ,so many people are unaware that their cholesterollevel is too high.

But in the late or chronic stages highcholesterol symptoms are shown in many other organs.

It is important to find outwhat your cholesterol numbers are because loweringcholesterol levels that are too high lessens the riskfor developing heart disease and reduces the chanceof a heart attack or dying of heart disease, even ifyou already have it.

Cholesterol lowering is importantfor everyone younger, middle age, and olderadults; women and men; and people with or withoutheart disease.

There are number of cholesterol medicines are available inthe market.

But before starting to take any cholesterolmedicine the causesof high cholesterol should be rectified.
