Cholesterol numbers are the indicators of blood cholesterol level in the patients

The level of the cholesterol are analyzed depends upon the type of cholesterol.

It is advisable to estimate the cholesterol level in the blood at least once in five years.

Types of blood cholesterol

1.Total cholesterol
2.LDL(low density lipo proteins) bad cholesterol

3.HDL( high density lipo proteins) good cholesterol

  • These lipoproteins has higher affinity to bind with cholesterol and removes blockages from the blood vessels.
  • Helps keep cholesterol from building up in the arteries

4.Triglycerides

Tests for Blood Cholesterol

"lipoprotein profile" is a blood test.

It will find out your numbers for cholesterol.

This blood test is done after a 9- to 12-hour fast and gives information about your cholesterol level.:

1.Total Cholesterol
Less than 5.20 mmol/L or 200mgs/dl)----------Desirable

5.20-6.18mmol/L or 200-239mgs/dl-----------Borderline

6.21mmol/L or 240mgs/dl and above-------------Undesirable

2.LDL(bad) Cholesterol
Less than 3.36mmol/L or130mgs/dl--------------Desirable

3.36-4.11mmol/L or 130-159mgs/dl--------------Borderline

4.14mmol/L or 160mgs/dl and above -------------Undesirable

3.HDL(good) cholesterol

Higher the HDL level is favorable.

More than 1.55 mmol/L or 60 mgs/dl--------------Desirable

0.9-1.55 mmol/L or 35-60 mgs/dl-----------------Borderline

Less than 0.9 mmol/L or less than 35 mgs/dl-----Undesirable.

4.Triglycerides

Less than 120 mgs/dl------------------------------Desirable

120-160 mgs/dl------------------------------------Borderline

More than160 mgs/dl-------------------------------Undesirable

(Cholesterol levels are measured in milli moles per liter and milligrams per Deciliter)

If it is not possible to get a lipoprotein profile done, knowing your total cholesterol and HDL cholesterol can give you a general idea about your cholesterol levels.

If your total cholesterol is 200 mg/dL* or more or if your HDL is less than 40 mg/dL, you will need to have a lipoprotein profile done.

By understanding the details above you can maintain the ideal level of cholesterol.
