Echocardiogram
Introduction Echocardiogram is an investigation commonly done by the cardiologist. It is a very valuable method of investigation for the heart patients. This investigation is usually done for the heart attack(myocardial infarction) patients with congestive cardiac failure What is an Echo Cardio Gram? This investigation is based on ultra sound waves(the sound waves having the frequency of less 20Hz or more than 20,000Hz) This sound is not audible to the human beings. The patient with Ischemic Heart Disease or Heart Attack is placed in the bed for the comfortable position for the test.. Doctor will put a probe over the chest. This probe emits the ultrasound in the heart. Ultrasound will return back to the probe and the data is stored in a computer. Then the computer will analyze the data from the various parts of the heart. Finally computer gives the heart picture as diagram.
Echocardiogram results It gives the interpretation of total size of the heart. Measures the individual chamber size. Gives the details of heart valuar defects. It gives functional value of fourth chamber of heart(Left ventricle-left lower part of heart). It is known as left venricular ejection fraction. Left Ventricular Ejection Fraction(LVEF) This should be more than 60%. This is decreased in patients with heart attack. Depending upon the severity it lowers in value. Echocardiogram Purpose It gives only the power of pumping action of heart. It will not show the blockage of blood vessels due to heart attack. Show patients with severe heart attack having multiple vessel blockage may show normal echo result. To find out blockage the patient should have ECG (electrocardiogram) or EKG test. THIS INVESTIGATION IS MAINLY TO RULE OUT HEARTFAILURE IN HEART ATTACK PATIENTS.
